Report on the Mediterranean economies. Edition 2018
edited by Eugenia Ferragina.

The 2018 edition of the Report published by Il Mulino has been published.

The 2018 edition of the Report on Mediterranean Economies analyses in detail the impact of economic and social inequalities, territorial imbalances and structural changes in labour markets on Mediterranean migration. The depth and extent of the political crisis that has affected the entire area have in fact radically changed the scenario on the basis of which the Euro-Mediterranean integration policy was conceived and implemented. Having taken note of this, the Report lays the foundations for the development of new models of analysis and political orientations able to respond to the dramatic challenges that the Mediterranean regions are facing. In a fragile and conflictual environment, where economic and political variables are closely related and mutually reinforcing, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to represent in a general framework the structural determinants of migration: imbalances, climate change, unemployment, weak institutions, lack of governance, lack of effective redistributive policies. To remedy this situation, territorial cohesion must be strengthened, income gaps must be reduced and access to basic infrastructure for marginal areas must be improved: all long-term objectives, for which it is necessary to build an inclusive development model that guarantees equal education and employment opportunities for young people and women.

Eugenia Ferragina was senior researcher at the Institute of Studies on Mediterranean Societies of the CNR and a contract professor of Economics and Institutions of the Mediterranean countries at the University of Naples "L'Orientale". From 2005 to 2018 she collaborated in the Report on the economies of the Mediterranean and was its editor from 2014.
