Welcome to the International Workshop "Bridging the Gap: the Role of Trade and FDI in the Mediterranean" webarea.
The international conference "Bridging the Gap: the Role of Trade and FDI in the Mediterranean" is organised by the Research Institute on the Mediterranean Societies (ISSM-C.N.R.), a FEMISE (Forum Euro-Méditerranéen des Institutes Economiques) partner, jointly by the Centre for International Economics and Development (CEIS) of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" , by the CNR working group on International Economics and by the Department for Economic Sciences and Statistics (DISES) of the University of Salerno.
The conference addresses the core issues related to the South Mediterranean integration with the EU: flows of goods, factors, technology and knowledge and their implications for development and competitiveness. Particular emphasis will be devoted to the results and lasting achievements of the Barcelona Agreement over the last decade and to the developments arising from increasing integration. In particular, we intend to contrast the partial failure of the goals of integration and closing up of the regional gaps within the Mediterranean Basin stated by the Partnership and Co-development Policy, to the successful EU enlargement to East.
We aim to bring together representatives of international organizations and distinguished economists of the two shores of the Mediterranean specialised on the topics of relevance to the analysis of the Mediterranean economies integration. The ultimate goal of the conference is to create an established network of scholars interacting on problems such as trade developments and competitiveness, investment, labour, growth, stabilisation, political economy of policy reforms in the Mediterranean.
